Simple put, frames allows a web designer to display the contents of 2 or more HTML pages at once. But why?

Many of the projects we worked on over the last several weeks involved multiple web pages with menu 'like' features on the top or left or right of every page. These menus were identical or mostly identical on every page. To create a new page, we could copy the menu HTML from an existing page. On some projects, the top of many pages were mostly identical -- with a logo and or Company name.

This week we learn about frames. Frames allow us to have ONLY one HTML page with menu info. Or, allow us to have ONLY one HTML page with header information, or footer information. One BIG advantage to this comes when changes need to be made. If we have 4 or 5 or 6 or more separate HTML pages, all with the same menu information included, we are faced with having to edit all these pages. Putting together web sites using Frames means that ONLY one HTML page has menu info. ONLY one menu page needs to be edited when changes are needed.

Using Frames can make websites much easier to maintain. Designing with Frames is an important topic. Using Frames requires planning. Take time with Tutorial 5. If your understand how Frames work before you start, you will finish this week's assignment very quickly .

BlackBoard uses frames.
