OTHER MATERIALS

Cell Wall

A Rigid or semirgid wall outside the plasma membrane that supports a cell and imparts shape to it; A cellular of plants, fungi, protistans, and most bacteria.

Central Vacuole

Of mature, living plant cells, a fluid-filled organelle that stores amino acids, sugars, ions, and toxic wastes. Its enlargement during growth causes the increases in surface area that improve nutrient uptake.

Chloroplast An organelle that specializes in photosynthesis in plants and certain protistans.

Golgi Body

Organelle in which newly synthesized polypeptide chains as well as lipids are modified and packaged in vesicles for export or for transport to specific locations within the cytoplasm.

Lysosome

The main organelle of digestion, with enzimes that can break down polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, and some lipids.

Microfilaments

In animal cells, one of a variety of cytoskeletal components. Action and mysosin fimaments are examples.

Microtubules

Hollow cylinder of mainly tubulin subunits; A cytoskeletal elemtent with roles in cell shape, motion, and growth and in the structure of coloa and flagella.

Nucleolus

Within the nucleus of a nondividing cell, a site where the protein and RNA subunits of ribosomes are assembled.

Nuclear Envelope

A double membrane ( two lipid bilayer and associated proteins ) that is the outermost portion of cell nucleus.

Vesicle

Within the cytoplasm of cells, one of a variety of small membrane-bound sacs that function in the transport, storage, or digestion of substances or in some other activity.
