Crew Escape Contest (Ultimate Egg Drop)
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT
A team will drop a large Grade A uncooked egg attached to an "elastic" cord as close as possible onto a target area without breaking it. Devices will be impounded one-half hour prior to the beginning of the event. No physical alterations may be made to the device's cord once it has been impounded (but, fine tune adjustments are allowed such as adjusting the length of the cord).
TEAM SIZE: 2
APPROXIMATE TIME: 15 minutes
THE COMPETITION
- Students will be allowed to average the scores from two drops which may be at two different heights. At National's, teams may be required to "touch down" in a pit of sand or flour and awarded points for the smallest depression to help break ties.
- The height from which the cord will be held and the egg is to be dropped will be between 3-7 meters. The height and location will not be announced until the day of the meet. The teams are responsible for the precise measurement of the drop height. The event supervisor will provide a measuring device. However, the students may bring and use their own measuring devices.
- Students will provide the "elastic" cord and harness to be used for their drop. The cord used in the drop may be made of more than one material and more than one strand, but must recoil at least 25% of the announced drop height in #2.
- The event supervisor will provide the raw large Grade A egg (approx. 65 grams) and a portable "scale" which teams may use to mass the egg. Teams may bring substances like sand to add to the harness to obtain a consistent mass.
- At least two cm of the "pointed" end of the egg should extend beyond the attachment harness and must not be protected in any way. The mass of the harness may not exceed 200 grams. The length of the harness may not exceed 15cm and must be detachable from the cord.
- If the egg is broken after it has been inspected and accepted by the student at any time before the drop, another egg may be received with a 5 cm penalty added to the final score.
- Students will have eight minutes from the time they are called to complete both drops of their egg.
SCORING
- The team with the lowest average score whose egg comes closest to touching or touches the target (which should be raised for video-taping) without breaking shall be name the winner. No team that has only one successful drop or that breaks the egg can be ranked ahead of a team that does not break an egg.
- The egg is considered broken as defined by cracking the egg enough to leave a wet spot on a paper towel.
